Do you remember a movie with an 17th century theme, where a married woman has an affair with the town’s preacher then the town finds out after she becomes pregnant and forces the guy she had an affair with to wear a giant red “A” to represent adultery? No? That’s because it wasn’t the man who had to wear it, it was the woman, and what happened to the guy, you may ask? Nothing!

This movie represents the sexism women face every day based on society’s standards. This type of sexism happens specifically during a woman’s love life.

Not only has this happened in movies, but it has also happened in many real-life events with widely known public figures such as Monica Lewinsky and other known celebrities. This type of judgment is called “Slut-Shaming,” and it happens everywhere. The HuffPost defines the term as a “sexually out of control girl,” based on the number of partners a woman has while being socially punished for it.

For years, women have been accused of promiscuity if they decided to be with more than one partner; however, men do not have the same social consequences when doing the same thing. As a matter of fact, men are celebrated for this type of behavior.

Leora Tanenbaum, a contributor writer at the Huffpost and slut-shaming expert, explains in an article titled “The Truth About Slut-Shaming,” is that the problem starts with the expectations a woman has even with something so minor as their “sexines.”

“If you refrain from any expression of sexiness, you may be written off as irrelevant and unfeminine. But if you follow the guidelines, you run the risk of being judged, shamed and policed,” wrote Tanenbaum in the article “The Truth About Slut-Shaming.”

This type of thinking and realization from experts is what continues to make it even harder for women to go out and find themselves sexually. There are many double standards that women face every day of their life, but the slut-shaming, specifically while choosing partners, is one of the most popular ones that has existed for centuries.

According to an article written by the Insider titled “11 Surprignsily Double Standards That Still Exist For Women In The US,” research shows that women who have more than one sexual partner are stigmatized while men are rewarded. This has been such a controversial topic in the US that many psychologists have done investigations to prove the double standards of various sexual partners between women and men.

“greater numbers of sexual partners are positively correlated with boys’ peer acceptance, but negatively correlated with girls’ peer acceptance,” said a 2009 research published research in Social Psychology Quarterly.

This type of behavior is problematic because it can cause a women’s confidence to lower, not to mention the damage that can create on her reputation. The Pacific Standard titled “Women Are Still Being Penalized For Having More Sexual Partners,” reported a new research where young American adults were surveyed. The survey proved that women are less favorable as their perceived number of sexual partners increased, unlike the men.

“This challenges the claim that the sexual double standard ... only emerges in certain contexts, or when moderated by certain individual differences,” wrote Michael Marks, of New Mexico State University.

The research was published in a journal called “Social Psychology,” designed to investigate attitudes towards female promiscuity.

The question after this explanation is, “What are we doing to progress from this?” The answer is not enough. The truth is that society has a long way to go to fix the current crisis society has with double standards, and I believe that the sooner we realize that, the faster we can progress and respect women more.
