As a little girl living in Puerto Rico, I used to hear all sorts of sounds that will erupt with the beautiful Caribbean Spanish I was used to hearing. I lived in a small town called Levittown, this is where my father was raised and where my family has been ever since they migrated upon being freed from slavery.

My parents would always take my sister and I to the Viejo San Juan known as the old San Juan, where I would hear so many different languages. At first, I thought it was pretty cool to know people from all over the world travel just to come see my little island but as a 22-year-old, I realized that was just the beginning of something more serious.

For years, Puerto Rico has been a big tourist site for many. Puerto Rico is part of the United States but not quite one of the state’s due to many disadvantages I am sure the island would’ve faced if so. Now that Puerto Rico has been hit with so many natural disasters while almost damaging its beauty, many have ignored the aid and support Puerto Rico needs from the United States while still being a territory.

This is not okay, and as many lives are being lost every day due to the lack of resources the United States government has yet to provided more resources and as a Puerto Rican who was raised in the Island, I believe the main priority before we use this place as a tourist town to cash out from it, we should help and provide resources for the many Puerto Ricans that are currently suffering.
